When first turned on, the motor will experience a brief spike in current until it settles into steady-state levels. This inrush current can be several times to normal steady-state operating current which can cause problems if not properly handled. This is where the motor starter’s second function of circuit protection comes in and different models are designed to manage variations of current spike for a limited, brief time period.
